Excel, the software for everything!
Microsoft has just launched its new version of Office. Even more powerful, Excel 2019 will be able to convert a photo into a data table, we are told.
However, nothing revolutionary has been announced for devisors or ciphers of all kinds. It will not yet be possible to convert a DPGF by the power of the mind alone, but perhaps it will come.
What is noted, however, is that many errors will still be present in the spreadsheets with this new version. Indeed, EXCEL is no exception to the rule according to which 95% of computer problems are located between the keyboard and the chair.
High-performance software for files that are much less efficient.
As proof, we have a study attesting that 88% of spreadsheets contain wording errors that can cause more or less serious inconvenience. Ask JP Morgan who lost £3 billion because of a misplaced “=Average(Sum(XX:XX))” formula (§ London Whale article). In a costing tool this can prove catastrophic because we are playing with the margin on business and consequently with the company's results.
Having myself developed certain encryption tools with Excel (with VBA of course) to encrypt special machines, I was always a little hesitant when my manager asked me “Are you sure your thing works?” ". My thing was a set of nested spreadsheets with links in all directions allowing installations to cost several hundred thousand euros, developed between noon and 2. This is the daily lot of many salespeople and companies that do not want to give themselves the means to invest in professional tools. The company has since gone bankrupt but there is probably no cause and effect link.
And you, are you sure that your spreadsheets are reliable?
Otherwise we use QDV7…
